Exploring Wisconsin’s Riverways with Our Mississippi River Road Trip Itinerary
There is a distinct magic in watching travelers rediscover iconic American waterways they thought they already knew.
On a recent group excursion along Wisconsin’s western boundary, we explored the stunning river corridors, historic port towns, and rolling landscapes defining the Mississippi River Valley. At Tour the Great Lakes, our passion lies in connecting travelers to North America’s great waters, whether cruising open lakes or journeying alongside legendary river routes. This expedition proved that the land-to-water connection along Wisconsin’s border offers an unforgettable journey filled with regional history, scenic overlooks, local culture, and incredible community hospitality.
For group travel leaders searching for a refreshing Midwest riverway itinerary, this route highlights the timeless beauty of the Driftless Region and the vibrant shorelines of the Mississippi.
A Scenic Overland Voyage Through the Driftless Region
Our riverway itinerary travels through one of the Midwest’s most extraordinary landscapes: Wisconsin’s unglaciated Driftless Area. Defined by towering limestone bluffs, winding river valleys, historic river ports, and historic rural chapels, this region offers a peaceful yet captivating travel experience.
You don’t always have to cross an ocean to find breathtaking scenery, deep history, and memorable culture. Sometimes, world-class travel experiences are right along our own home waterways.
Highlights Along the Waterway
The most rewarding travel moments are often the unexpected ones. Nothing beats the quiet river views, the hidden regional landmarks, and the welcoming locals who bring history to life.
Our river route ventured beyond standard tourist stops, guiding guests into historic port towns, scenic botanical grounds, and remarkable heritage sites. Along the way, travelers enjoyed exceptional regional dining, engaging group discussions, and shared moments that built lasting friendships.
Day-by-Day Riverway Itinerary
Day One: Heritage, Bluffs, and Historic Port Towns
Our journey set course westward across Wisconsin toward the Mississippi River basin. As the topography transitioned into the dramatic bluffs and valleys of the Driftless Region, travelers were treated to panoramic countryside views.
Our first major stop was the serene Saint Francis Hermitage in Gays Mills. Surrounded by quiet woods and rolling hills, guests enjoyed a peaceful mid-day retreat and a wholesome, farm-fresh meal. This stop is the perfect introduction to the region’s heritage of hospitality.
Continuing through the valley, we followed scenic country roads toward Prairie du Chien, one of the oldest river settlements on the upper Mississippi. Here, we visited the magnificent Villa Louis historic site along the riverbank. Guests enjoyed traditional afternoon tea while listening to local historian Mary Elise Antoine share fascinating stories about the generations of women who shaped this historic estate.
Our afternoon featured a stop at the historic Potosi Brewing Company, deeply tied to the region’s river-trade era. It is incredible to recall that this landmark facility was once abandoned and sold at auction for under $3,000 before being lovingly restored into a national brewing museum!
We concluded our first day crossing toward Dubuque, Iowa, checking into the landmark Hotel Julien along the riverfront for an evening of relaxation and river views.
Day Two: Botanical Wonders, Heritage Architecture, and Unscripted Moments
Morning in Dubuque brought an exploration of one of the Mississippi’s most picturesque river cities, renowned for Victorian architecture and waterfront revitalization.
We began with a stroll through the Dubuque Arboretum & Botanical Gardens, taking in beautiful floral displays and manicured grounds maintained entirely by a dedicated volunteer force.
Next, we visited a historic downtown church celebrated for its breathtaking stained glass artistry. While admiring the sanctuary, an unexpected question arose:
“Have you ever played the pipe organ here?”
That single inquiry sparked an unforgettable, spontaneous moment. Moments later, our local escort sat at the console, filling the towering sanctuary with incredible music. Travelers sat spellbound under the glow of stained glass. This is a perfect example of how the best group travel moments happen organically.
Our progressive lunch featured two standout historic preservation sites: Steeple Square, a beautifully repurposed historic church turned community hall, and an elegant local bed and breakfast rich in 19th-century river-era heritage.
The afternoon offered flexible options: guests could explore downtown Dubuque’s riverfront district at their own pace, or join an optional excursion to the iconic Field of Dreams movie site nearby.
Day Three: Sacred Art, Local Traditions, and the Journey Home
On our final morning, we visited Sinsinawa Mound, a site steeped in education, faith, and regional history. Guests reconnected with Midwest heritage, and we made sure everyone departed with a famous freshly baked loaf of Sinsinawa cinnamon bread to enjoy at home!
Our final highlight was the legendary Dickeyville Grotto. As one of the Midwest’s most celebrated examples of folk art, this extraordinary collection of stone, shell, and mosaic craftwork left everyone in awe. It is precisely the type of hidden treasure that leaves guests exclaiming:
“I never would have known about this place.”
By the time our coach headed home, travelers had experienced a complete, multi-faceted journey highlighting river heritage, scenic bluffs, local flavor, and unforgettable sights.
